Taizhou has been an important port for foreign exchange throughout history. As early as 230 A.D., the first voyage to Yizhou (Taiwan) was made from Zhang¡¯an (north part of Haimen Port in Taizhou downtown), marking the beginning of China¡¯s exercise of jurisdiction over Taiwan. Taizhou now has 21 ports of varied sizes, forming a framework of ¡°Three Bays and Three Harbors¡± with Haimen Harbor at Taizhou Bay, Jiantiao Harbor at Sanmen Bay and Damaiyu |
Harbor at Yueqing Bay forming the main harbour areas. Haimen Harbor, with a long history of over 1,000 years has become the key seaport of Southeast China for foreign trade since the 19th century, and had been visited by Japanese trading ships as early as the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). In 1989, the State Council approved Haimen Harbor to be one of the ports open to foreign shipping in China. Approved by the National Transportation Ministry, all the ports in Taizhou were renamed as Taizhou Harbor, and meanwhile Taizhou Harbor was allowed to develop into a multifunctional comprehensive modernized international port with Haimen Harbor as the center and Damaiyu Harbor and Jiantiao Harbor as its two wings in the year 2001. Haimen Harbor Area, with a straight coastal line¡¢a broad harbor basin and a total planned coastal line of 4500m. by both southern and northern parts, has now 81 wharves of different tonnages, 20 of which allow tonnages ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 tons. It has an annual handling capacity of 20 million tons, and regularly ships international containers. Damaiyu Harbor Area is listed as a nationally Type-II port. Jiantiao Harbor Area was once called ¡±an important port of industry¡± by Dr. Sun Yatsen and named as ¡°the ninth fishing port of the Orient in the future¡± in his work ¡°the State Projects¡±. With a depth of over 10 meters but no silt all the year, Damaiyu Harbor Area and Jiantiao Harbor Area boast 22 wharves of many thousands of tonnages, 1 multifunctional wharf of 20 thousand tonnages, and has the capacity to build more than 20 additional berths of 50,000 to 100,000 tonnages.
In 2004, the total volume of freight handled by Taizhou Harbor hit 27.2158 million tons, among which 1.743 million tons were for international trade in 40,451 standard containers. These figures increased 26.6%¡¢10% and 38.2% respectively, over those of last year. |

| ¡ò Ocean

Taizhou, with its vast ocean area, has 695 islands of over 5 square kilometers each and has the biggest shallow-sea area of 4,054.1 square kilometers within the depth contour of 10 meters in Zhejiang. With a continental shelf of 80,000 square kilometers and a cultivated shoal and inshore of 280 square kilometers, Taizhou has rich fishing resources. yellow croakers, hairtail, pomfret, Chinese herring, sierra, conger eel rockfishes¡¢cuttlefish¡¢kelp, razor clam as well as prawns, sea crabs and other marine products. The region also boasts a large quantity of testacean aquatics, and other aquatics such as real porgy, black porgy, perches, eels, soft-shelled turtles, and porgies are also cultivated in large quantities in the area.
In 2004, Taizhou produced 1.3838 million tons of aquatic products, including 0.9452 million tons of aquatic products caught at sea, 0.3942 million tons of cultivated aquatic products and 44.4 thousand tons of freshwater aquatic products. |

There are many power sources in the Taizhou area. The Taizhou Bay comprehensive Energy District, having finished the preliminary construction, incorporates fire thermal power, hydroelectric power and wind power. In 2004, the total installed power capacity reached 1.898 million KW. and 10.851 billion KW power was generated in Taizhou. Zhejiang. It has total installed capacity of 1.44 million KW. Wenling Jiangxia Tidal Tentative Generating Plant, with an installed capacity of 3200 KW, is listed as the second largest in China and third largest in the world. Kuocangshan Wind Power Generating Plant is the largest in terms of scale in East China and one of the top wind power generating plants in the world.
Taizhou has great potential in resource exploitation. Sanmen Bay Nuclear Power Station, with a total investment of RMB 25 billion has an installed capacity of 2.00 million. KW. Yuhuan Huaneng Thermal Power Plant, has an installed capacity of 3.6million KW, and Tiantai Tongbai Pumped Storage Power Plant, which, with a total investment of RMB4.87 billion has an installed capacity of 1.2million KW and was one of national key projects are under construction. When these projects are finished, an energy framework will be formed with nuclear power remaining primary, thermal power and hydropower supplementary, pumped storage power generation supporting, and wind power and tidal power complementary. This will make Taizhou the largest and most important energy base in East China. |

Linhai, a national historical and cultural city of China
Linhai with a history of over 2,100 years assembles cultural relics. Taizhou Ancient City Wall site, over 6,000 meters long, is one of the Grade-4A tourist sites of the country. Built in Eastern Jin Dynasty, it is reputed as ¡°the Great Wall of South China¡±. Jinshan Park and East Lake Park in the city proper are another two lovely scenic spots. |

Mt. Tiantai, a national key scenic spot of China
Mt. Tiantai, the birthplace of both Tiantai-sect of Chinese Buddhism and Southern-sect of Chinese Taoism, has some key scenic spots such as Guoqing Temple, Shiliang, Chicheng Hill, Hanshan Lake and Huading Peak.
